A week or two after the end of Holy Week, begin in Seville the festivities of the Feria de Abril, the most popular and famous of all Andalusia.
It s a popular celebration in honor of the Andalusian culture that in the spring, during a whole week, transforms the city of Seville in a great feast with typical food, music, dancing and shows.
The Feria takes place mainly in the set of stalls and attractions that are installed in an enclosure in the neighborhood Los Remedios. In these stalls people get together to eat typical Andalusian food like bacalao, gazpacho, pescado frito and to drink rebujito and beer.
The women wear traditional dress of Flamenca or Gitana and through the streets you can hear the sevillanas, the typical song and dance of the Feria.
Coinciding with the Feria also begins the season of Bullfights in the bullring called Real Maestranza de Caballería.
The Feria ends, after a week of festivities, with the traditional blast of fireworks near the river.
Here we leave you 10 tips to enjoy an unforgettable Fair:
1 - Wear comfortable yet elegant clothes. The Sevillians wear their best clothes throughout the fair.
2 - The streets of the fair are covered with ground like the one of the bullrings. So remember to wear comfortable shoes that you do not mind smudging.
3 - If you go with a group, decide a meeting point as a reference. The main gate or the big wheel is a good place. I you get lost, it will be very useful.
4 - During the day and until 8 pm the ‘Royal’ is full of carriages and horse-drawn carriages where you can see many Sevillians dressed in traditional costumes – Women in gitana’s dresses and men in flamenco suits.
5 - Although women normally dress the typical costume, you can choose not to do it and dress in a different way. Everyone has got its place in Feria.
6 - There are many tents, most private but do not worry; you have at your disposal more than 16 public marquees to enjoy the good atmosphere.
7 - You cannot leave the Fair without trying a jug of ‘Rebujito’, typical drink during this festival that is composed of manzanilla wine and 7UP. In addition, we recommend you the tortilla, the Serrano ham and the ’Pescaíto Frito’ (Fried Fish).
8 - There is an area called ‘The Street of Hell’ where all the attractions meet. It receives this name because of the high volume of the music from the carnies.
9 - To get to the fairground, we advise you to use public transport. During this week, bus, underground and taxi services are increasing.
10 - Two of the most important moments are the beginning of the fair with the traditional ‘Alumbrado’ (Lightening of the main gate) and its ‘Dinner of the fish’ plus the closing with an impressive fireworks show on Saturday at midnight.
Finally, enjoy! Live this party with the Sevillians, soak up their culture, gastronomy, art...’La Feria de Sevilla’ is visited by thousands of people whose main purpose is to enjoy one of the most colourful and beautiful festivals of the city.
