Description

We'll start on Calle Pelayo, one of the city's main shopping streets. This street, which runs from Plaça de la Universitat to Plaça de Catalunya, serves as a division between the older and newer parts of the city. We will continue our walking tour through one of the largest squares in Spain and one of the most important places in Barcelona, the Plaza de Catalunya, which covers an area of 30,000 square metres.

From here, we will walk down one of the most beautiful and famous streets of the city, Las Ramblas, down its 1.2 km length through flower and souvenir stalls to arrive by the sea, at the old harbour of the city. We will learn about the history of the ancient city of Barcelona, the guide will tell us how the Emperor Augustus founded it and the name he gave it.

We will see the remains of the city walls as we walk through the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter and arrive at the Plaza Nova or Cathedral Square. Here, in the centre of the Gothic Quarter, is the Cathedral. It was built on the foundations of the primitive early Christian basilica and the later Romanesque Cathedral and is Gothic in style. We will have the opportunity to meet important figures in the history of the city such as San Roque or Wilfredo el Velloso and to learn more about the flag of Catalonia and how its current design came about. We will walk through Plaça del Rei and Plaça del Pi until we reach Plaça de Sant Jaume, the current administrative and political centre of the city. Here we find the Town Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat. In Roman times, two of the city's main communication routes crossed here: the Cardo and the Decumanus.

Highlights:

- Discover the 250 gargoyles that keep watch from the heights of the Cathedral.

- Find the Roman wall, which is located behind the chapel of Santa Agata

- Get to know the old part of the city with a local guide.
