JEREZ

Jerez, Andalusian fifth largest city and one of the most important as it is the birthplace of flamenco while being known for its horses and wine. Originally founded by the Phoenicians in 1200 BC followed by the Tartessos, the Carthaginians and Romans. The Romans were the ones who named the city Jerez. The Visigoths then arrived and expelled the Romans, followed by Byzantines, then the Arabs who conquered until the 15th century. The British also conquered Jerez during the 19th century.

Sherry comes from Jerez and was exported to Britain due to its popularity there. As a result, many British companies and styles were established with plenty wine cellars in Jerez being founded by English families. British hero, Francis Drake, caused the popularisation of sherry in the UK by bringing home 2900 barrels as part of his spoils of war.

Jerez hosts the MotoGP series on its race tracks while being home to wine and horse museums.
