In this article, we tell you how to visit the Giralda with tickets and its history. The Giralda is an emblem of the Andalusian capital, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. One of the essential places you must see on your visit to Seville. A place that has lived more than 800 years of history.

Giralda’s history

As we have mentioned before, the Giralda is one of the most emblematic monuments of Seville, located next to the Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede, in the heart of the historic centre. It sums up, perfectly, many centuries of its history, with the cultural mix that inhabited the capital, reflected in its architecture.

The Giralda can be divided into two sections. The first section of the Giralda is in the Almohad style and the second is in the Renaissance style. At the top, you can see the Giraldillo, which is another emblem of the city.

The Giralda in the Almohad period

In the Middle Ages, during the period of Almohad domination, Seville became the capital of Al-Andalus. As a result, it was decided to update the city's infrastructure, with the construction of a new mosque being one of the priority projects.

Construction of the new mosque began in 1172 on the orders of the Caliph Abu Ya'aqub Yusuf, and it became operational in 1182. However, it was his son, Abu Yusuf al-Mansur, who ordered the construction of the mosque's minaret, from which the call to prayer was to be made.

The Giralda in the Renaissance period

With the Christian conquest in 1248, the great Almohad mosque of Seville became a cathedral. But the minaret was not changed at first. Then, in 1365, an earthquake destroyed the copper sphere finial.

In the 16th century, the second body was added, which can still be seen today in the Giralda of Seville. It is the bell tower, the Christian body, which was perfectly joined to the Almohad body.

At approximately 104 metres high, the Giralda was for a long time one of the tallest towers in Europe.

How to enter the Giralda?

From inside the Cathedral of Seville is the access to the Giralda. The Giralda bell tower is reached via 35 fairly wide ramps. The ramps are wide enough to allow the bell tower to be climbed on horseback. In the past, the imam did not like to walk and when he visited the Giralda, he did so on horseback.
